Summary and Precis: Similarities and Differences

  • Often perceived synonymously as both of them bear one third of the original text or the same
  • practical purpose
    From academic or theoretical point of view, they are different. 
  • Summary: newer term, need not conform to rules relative freedom, both important and unimportant ideas, language of the original, divided into paragraphs, more than one third in length 
  • Precis: older term, only main ideas in writer's own language, no paragraphs but one continuous

Similarities between Precis and Summary:
  1. Structurally one third of the original text, maintaining the order that of the original text, the skeleton of the original, in complete sentences 
  2. Substantially/factually only the important points, no additional ideas. 
  3. Functionally providing the gest of the original, helping the readers to draw on the main ideas.
Differences between precis and summary:
  1. Summary one third or can be more whereas precis a concised summary or can be less than one third.
  2. All main points in summary, but only the essential points in precis
  3. Summary uses the language of the text, but precis can use the language of the writer.
  4. The order of the original for precis, but basically not neccesary for summary
  5. Precis always writen, but summary can be both writen or spoken
  6. Precis is older term than summary.
